Born on January 16, 1918, in Villanubla in the archdiocese of Valladolid, Spain, Cardinal González studied at the Seminary of Villanubla and then at the Pontifical University of Camillar where he earn a degree in Theology. Ordained on June 29, 1941, he worked as a professor of Theology at the Seminary of Valladolid and in the departments of Medicine and Law at the State University. Later he travelled all over Spain giving spiritual exercises and retreats. Appointed Titular Bishop of the Church of Astorga on December 31, 1960, he actively participated in the Second Vatican Council, where Pope Paul VI publicly commended one of his pastoral writings. Promoted Archbishop pro illa vice at Casa Mediane on February 21, 1966, he succeeded to the see of Barcelona on January 7, 1967. He moved to Toledo on December 3, 1971. Paul VI created him a Cardinal Paul VI at the Consistory of March 5, 1973. He retired from his duties as archbishop on June 23, 1995.
