Born in Midland in the diocese of Saginaw on 11 October 1920, Cardinal Hickey was ordained on 15 June 1946 at the age of 25. He was assigned to the titular diocese of Taraqua on 18 February 1967 and consecrated on 14 April 1967. He was transferred to Cleveland diocese on 31 May 1974 and made Archbishop of Washington DC on 17 June 1980.
