Born in Villafranca Sicula in the diocese of Agrigento (Sicily) on September 23, 1918, Cardinal Pappalardo studied at the Major Pontifical Seminary and later at the Pontifical Lateran University. He was made a priest on April 12, 1941. In 1942 he graduated in Theology in Rome and began to attend courses at the Vatican Diplomatic Academy. He commenced working in the Secretariat of State in 1947, and remained there until 1965. At the same time, he taught diplomacy at the Vatican Academy. Appointed Archbishop of Mileto by Paul VI on December 7, 1965, he was also named Pro-Nuncio of Indonesia. He was called back to Rome in 1970 to direct the Diplomatic Academy, holding this position only a short period. On October 17 of the same year, he was named Archbishop of Palermo, from which he retired in 1996. He was elevated to the cardinalate by Paul VI during the Consistory of March 5, 1973.
