Angel Suquia Goicoechea was born in the Spanish diocese of San Sebastian, in Zaldivia, on October 2, 1916. He completed his studies at the Seminary of Vitoria and then travelled to Germany to specialize in Liturgy at Maria-Laach. He was ordained in Rome on July 7, 1940. In Rome, he earned his doctorate in Dogmatic Theology at the Gregorian University. In 1951, he returned to his native land to teach Dogmatic and Moral Theology at the Vitoria Seminary. He then served as Rector there between1955 and 1965, acting at the same time as Canon Penitentiary of Vitoria's Cathedral and Vice-President of the Institute of Spirituality at the University of Salamanca. He was made Bishop of Almerķa on May 17, 1966. Suquia Goicoechea has directed the spiritual exercises for priests in Europe, the United States, Mexico and Cuba. He was transferred to Malaga on November 28, 1969, then to Santiago de Compostela on April 13, 1973, and finally promoted to Archbishop of Madrid on April 12, 1983. He was elevated to the cardinalate by John Paul II during the Consistory of May 25, 1985 and has worked also for the Secretariat of State. He retired from his post as Archbishop of Madrid on July 28, 1994.
