Cardinal Thiandoum was born into a pious Catholic family (his father was a catechist), in Poponguine, Dakar archdiocese, Senegal, on February 2, 1921. He studied at Dakar's regional seminary and was ordained on April 18, 1949. From 1949 to 1953, he was a pastor, then left for Rome to pursue further studies. He received degrees in Philosophy and Sociology from the Gregorian University, and by 1955 was back in Senegal as Catholic Action representative and parish priest for Dakar Cathedral. Thiandoum was named Archbishop of Dakar on February 24, 1962. He actively participated at the Second Vatican Council, particularly contributing to the discussions on liturgical reform. He was elevated to the cardinalate by Paul VI during the Consistory of May 24, 1976. Cardinal Thiandoum was a member of the Congregations for the Evangelization of Peoples, for the Clergy, and for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life.
