Born in Saint-Frederic-de-Beauce (Archdiocese of Quebec, Canada) on 4 February, 1912, he was ordained on 11 June, 1938. In 1949 he earned a doctorate in Theology from the Angelicum in Rome. Back in Canada, he taught Theology at the University of Laval from 1949 t0 1955, and he became President of the University (1960-1972). Nominated bishop of the titular church of Mesarfelta on 4 April, 1977, he became Archbishop of Quebec on 20 March, 1981. Former president of the Quebec Bishops' Assembly, he played a very important role in planning and organizing the Holy Father's 1964 apostolic visit to Canada. John Paul II made him a Cardinal him a Cardinal during the Consistory of 25 May 1985. Cardinal Vachon renounced his position as Archbishop of Quebec on 17 March 1990.
