Cardinal Willebrands was born in Bovenkarspel, in the diocese of Haarlem, Holland, on September 4, 1909. He studied Philosophy at the Angelicum, and was ordained a priest on May 26, 1934. From 1937 to 1940 he taught philosophy at Warmond, Holland, and in 1945 he became the director of the Major Seminary. On June 24, 1960, he was elected president of the St. Willebrord Association, an organization promoting ecumenical activities in Holland, and was soon after named by John XXIII Secretary of the newly formed Secretariat for Christian Unity. Appointed Bishop of the titular Church of Mauriana on June 4, 1964, he was promoted to Utrecht on December 6, 1975 and retired on December 3, 1983. On April 12, 1968, Paul VI named him President of the Secretariat for the Christian Unity. He was elevated to the cardinalate by Paul VI during the Consistory of April 28, 1969. He was Emeritus President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity and Chamberlain (Camerlengo) of the College of Cardinals.
