Cardinal Priest of S Felice da Cantalice a Centocelle
Cardinal Kim was born in Tae Gu, South Korea, on May 8, 1922. After doing parish work in 1947 and serving the Archbishop of Tae Gu as a secretary, he was ordained on September 15, 1951. He graduated in Philosophy from the Sophia University of Tokyo, and afterwards became director of the Tae Gu Catholic paper, Catholic Shilbo. Between 1956 and 1964 he studied social sciences in Munster, Germany. He was named Bishop of Masan on February 15, 1966, and promoted to Seoul on April 9, 1968. As Archbishop, he implemented programs to improve education in the seminaries and among the laity. He was named cardinal by Paul VI during the Consistory of April 28, 1969, becoming the youngest member of the College of Cardinals. Presently Cardinal Kim also serves as Apostolic Administrator of Pyong Yang, North Korea, and is a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of the Peoples.
