Pio Laghi was born in Castiglione of Fiorli, Emilia Romagna, on May 21, !922 and was ordained on April 20, 1946. He received a degree in Theology in 1947 and in Canon Law in 1950, both from the Lateran. Appointed Titular Archbishop of Mauriana on June 22, 1969, he was named Apostolic Delegate to Jerusalem and Palestine. During five years in Jerusalem he served as Pro-Nuncio to Cyprus and Apostolic Visitor for Greece. In April, 1974, Laghi was transferred to Argentina as Apostolic Nuncio. He remained there until December 1980, when he was named Apostolic Delegate to the US. In March 1984, when official ties had been established between the Holy See and the US government, Laghi became Apostolic Pro-Nuncio. Upon his return to Rome, he was made Pro-Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education on April 6, 1990, and was promoted to Prefect on July 1, 1991, after having been elevated to the College of Cardinals by John Paul II during the Consistory of June 28.
