Cardinal Priest of Regina Apostolorum
Cardinal Virgilio Noe was born in Zelata of Bereguardo in the diocese of Pavia on March 30, 1922 and was ordained on October 1, 1944. In 1964, he was called to Rome as Secretary of the Centre for Liturgical Action (CAL), and on May 7, 1969, was appointed by Pope Paul VI to be Under-Secretary of the new Congregation for Divine Worship. In this capacity, Noe was to assist in the pastoral implementation of Vatican II's liturgical reform. On January 1970, Noe was named Master of Pontifical Ceremonies. It was his duty to apply the principles and regulations contained in the Vatican II documents on liturgical reform also to ceremonies in the Papal Chapel. He was made an archbishop on January 30, 1982, and was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Noe was made a cardinal by John Paul II during the Consistory of June 28, 1991.
