Cardinal Priest of St Lawrence in Lucina
Born in Piacenza, Emilia Romagna, on November 25, 1917, and ordained on July 28, 1940, Poggi worked his entire ecclesiastical career in the diplomatic sector. Already by 1945, while working with the First Section of the Secretariat of State, his exceptional mediation talents had become apparent. He served in Tunisia, Cameroon, Gabon and the Central African Republic, and was named Apostolic Nuncio to Peru in May of 1969. In 1973 Paul VI called him back to Rome to take on special assignments to the Communist countries of Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania and Bulgaria. Relations between the Vatican and Poland were normalized in 1974, and Poggi was made Head of the Holy See Delegation in Poland. Named Apostolic Nuncio in Italy in 1986, he was elevated to the College of Cardinals by John Paul II during the Consistory of November 26, 1994. On the same date, he was also appointed Archivist and Librarian of the Holy Roman Church, a position he holds to this day.
