Cardinal Priest of S. Cuore di Cristo Re
Furno was born in Bairo Canavese in the diocese of Ivrea on December 2, 1921. He became a priest on June 25, 1944, and devoted his entire ecclesiastical career to the Vatican diplomatic service. An alumnus of the Vatican Diplomatic Academy, Furno was named Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciatures in Colombia and Ecuador, and of the Apostolic Delegation in Jerusalem. He then worked for 11 years in the First Section of the Vatican Secretariat of State. On August 1, 1973, Pope Paul VI named him Archbishop of Abari and Apostolic Nuncio to Peru. In 1978, 1982 and 1992, Furno then worked respectively as Apostolic Nuncio to Lebanon, Brazil and Italy. John Paul II elevated him to the College of the Cardinals during the Consistory of November 26, 1994. He has been serving as Grand Master for the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem since December 16, 1995.
