Cardinal Priest of St. Andrew delle Fratte
Born on 18 November 1936 in Todi, Italy, he attended the Seminary of Todi, the Pontifical Regional Seminary of Assisi and the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary. He obtained a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Lateran University and a doctorate in letters and philosophy from the State University of Perugia.
He was ordained in Todi on 2 April 1960 and taught at the Seminary of Perugia, later becoming its vice-rector, then rector. He also taught theology at the Regional Seminary of Assisi and art history at the Superior Institutes of Assisi and Deruta.
He was appointed bishop of Gubbio on 25 May 1982 and consecrated on 29 August 1982 by Bishop Grandoni, bishop of Orvieto and Todi. He was made Metropolitan Archbishop of Perugia-Cittą della Pieve on 6 October 1988.
He resigned from the pastoral governance of his archdiocese after he was elected Secretary-General of the Italian Episcopal Conference on 25 May 1995.
The Holy Father appointed him Archbishop of Florence on 21 March 2001 and made him a Cardinal at the consistory of 21 October 2003, giving him the title of San Andrea delle Fratte.
