Cardinal Priest of St Saturnius
Cardinal Quezada Toruno was born on 8 March 1932 in Guatemala City, the eldest of three children.
He studied in El Salvador, Germany and Rome and was ordained on 21 September 1956 in Guatemala.
He speaks Spanish, Latin, French, Italian and German.
He has held various pastoral and teaching positions, including at one time being Rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Zacapa on 5 April 1972 and consecrated in Guatemala on 13 May 1972 by Archbishop Prigione, Nuncio in Guatemala.
He was named Coadjutor of Zacapa on 11 September 1975 and succeeded to its full governance on 16 February 1980.
He was President of the Guatemalan Bishops' Conference from 1988-1992, and played a key role in ending the civil war in his country that had continued for 36 years.
He was appointed Archbishop of Guatemala City on 19 June 2001.
Pope John Paul II elevated him to the College of Cardinals on 21 October 2003.
