Cardinal Priest of St. Mary in Traspontina
Cardinal Ouellet was born on 8 June 1944 in Lamotte (Canada), one of 8 children.
He studied in Laval and Montreal before being ordained on 25 May 1968. He then undertook higher studies in Rome.
He entered the Society of Priests of St Sulpice on 1972 and held several teaching positions in Colombia, Montreal and Edmonton. He was a professor at the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family from 1997 to 2001.
He was appointed to the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity on 3 March 2001 and consecrated bishop of the titular see of Agropoli on 19 March 2001 in Rome by Pope John Paul II.
On 15 November 2002, he was made Archbishop of Quebec City.
Pope John Paul II elevated him to the College of Cardinals on 21 October 2003, giving him the title of Santa Maria in Traspontina, just 2 years after he first became a bishop.
