Cardinal Deacon of Sacred Heart of Christ the King
Born on 4 July 1945, one of three children. He studied for the priesthood in Krakow and Rome (at the Pontifical Gregorian University).
He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Krakow on 30 March 1969 by Cardinal Wojtyla (later Pope John Paul II), and after a short period of pastoral work, took up further studies and then teaching and academic positions.
In 1987, he was called to Rome and made responsible for the Youth section of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. He coordinated the World Youth Days in Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and Czestechowa (Poland). He was transferred to the Polish section of the Secretariat of State in 1992.
Pope John Paul II named him Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Laity on 20 December 1995, raising him to the dignity of bishop. He was consecrated on 6 January 1996 in St Peter's by His Holiness, and given the titular see of Novica. He was promoted to President of the same Pontifical Council on 4 October 2003, and raised to the dignity of Archbishop.
Pope Benedict XVI made him a Cardinal on 24 November 2007.
